I sampled the justice system some over 20 years ago and thought there was some considerable room for improvements. Like for one, they act like a business, though don’t respect rule one of normal business, “customer feedback”; ie taking the right to vote away from millions of people is legitimately removing customer feedback creating a almost dictatorship and that feeds a beast called ignorance which feeds a beast called arrogance that produces disfunction in a society just as much as any crimes.
Real results of this are stuff like saying or getting the News to say, oh crime is really high, that’s why we had “tent city in Maricopa County AZ for many years”. Fact is, it was a bunch of old military tents reused as housing for 1000’s of people claiming to be innocent and awaiting trial within a YEAR, to keep it “Constitutional”.
It was reported 130 degrees or so in those tents in the summer and 40 degrees or so in the winter. They tried putting me in there for grabbing some wooden pallets, literally out of a dumpster and said I would have to wait in there at tent city about a year for trial if I don’t take the plea deal, forced to be labeled a thief for life at a low price of $350 plus I had to pay for my impound fees and that has a negative impact on not just the person though society too, as I never looked at life the same and many people treated me poorly from a false prejudice invisible to most? Though cops and employers see “theft control property” and not wooden pallets from dumpster at all. Oh and they only gave me a short time to appeal and that costed so much money too, I showed up as soon as I had the money to appeal and they said I was a day or a hour late, some non sense like that. So anyways been thinking for years about starting a non profit organization to help people awaiting trial because I see the road ahead of them to some regards and if they are innocent, its so important to stay innocent.
If anyone wants to help with that, its volunteer for now, though later may be paid positions if it takes off, like it might, as its not so easy to fix any part of the justice system machine, though to help some innocent people make sure they get to talk to a real attorney and one that isn’t being paid as a plea deal pusher that is glorified for how many cases they close on a plea deal to avoid costly trials. It makes sense sometimes when guilty to accept a good plea deal. Though when innocent and it was just some young cops on a quota made from the Sheriff at that time named Joe Arpaio. So the cops were trying to get the most arrests for the month to win a prize or bonus, and I or you are at the other side of that without due process, now attached to a chain gang for picking up trash and looking at a year in jail before talking to a judge..? Thus that is how and why I think Tent City existed, it was born from disfunction, the product of arrogance and ignorance? Cops are not allowed to have quota’s like that any more I heard and guess what, tent city is gone now too. I saw crime from the other side. I was kidnapped and stolen from and then branded a thief for life at 17 with no one to help me.
